Sister's face:
        For Jeanette
by Christina Kiplinger-Johns

This image haunts me still
My sister?pallid cheeks
Wet from crying,
Hair wind-damaged
And unkempt
Once bright blue eyes
Gleaming over the horizon
Of an innocent world
Seeing all dreams
Pleasant from there
Now dull and glazed
Over by time
Lip bloodied and bruised
Eyeball barely in socket
Dressed in clothes
From a decade ago
Her hands shaking
Her voice breaking
And still she whispers
I love him.
